A Life With Wool

An online journal of my creative life

Hello Friends

So sorry I have been MIA but I needed a bit of a break from many things, which I’m sure many of you can understand and even relate too. With work taking up so much of my day, it leaves very little time for my creative endeavors. This saddens me but it’s life. Those of you who are still working probably can relate to this quite well, and understand the struggle of trying to do all “the things”. At the end of the day though being creative should not be a race to the finish line (in my humble opinion) but should be a way to mend one’s soul, soothe one’s spirit and most of all be a time to reflect. Finding balance between work and my creative nature has often be hard for me but I will get there eventually.

With that being said my online presence may falter a bit too , which means I may not post as much here on my blog or comment on yours (I will catch up though), but I want you to know how much I appreciate your online friendship and support.

Faith gives you an inner strength and a sense of balance and perspective in life. – Gregory Peck

I have not done much at all since the beginning of last week. My work teammate and I had high hopes of knitting time together at our team meeting but that didn’t happen. We really didn’t have much time to even breathe last week during our two day meeting, and I somehow lost the sock I was working on too…sigh.

The loss of the sock makes me sad as I loved the needles I was using and will now have to replace them. The positive of the sock before loosing it is I learned how to make a shadow wrap heel and loved learning something new. I definitely will use this heel method more often.

I have one finished object, a cozy for my French Press. For the main portion I used a lovely skein of handspun that was gifted to me many years ago and for the ribbing I used Patons Kroy in black, I was happy to also to use repurposed buttons!

For this project I used size US 6 needles and casted on 72 stitches. I worked a two by two rib for each end for 1” and a broken rib for the body. I also made four I-cord loops for the buttons at the left edge as I was knitting, and spaced them about an inch apart. I did not have this piece blocked when I took the photos but blocked afterwards, and I will say blocking helped tremendously. Now I have a fun finished object that is functional too!

I am still working on the body of my Mimungo pullover, which is tedious boring stockinette but it’s mindless and perfect to work on while watching movies. My Harvest cardigan has seen no love but hope to work on it a bit this weekend. Meantime I am trying hard not to cast on anything else but I will have to say Andrea Mowry’s new shawl design, Melt, has me itching to cast on. I have never tried the brioche stitch and think this would be a great piece to give it a try. Anyone else liking this design or casting it on?

Have a great weekend!

  1. The seasons for creative energies do seem to ebb and flow. We do what we can with the time we have – no judgement. So sad about your sock. I saw that shawl and brioche is interesting. I feel like a shift is coming with my making after my big sweater finish. I am retired but there are still so many things that require my time – maybe even with higher outside expectations. Learning to roll with it seems to be a lifetime task. Will enjoy what you share when time allows.

    1. I love how you said “ seasons for creative energies do seem to ebb and flow” , that is so true and a great way to describe it. I was recently told by a retired client that they were more busy today than when they worked and like you had many things that now require their time. Definitely have to roll with it and just take one day at a time. I look forward to seeing what you work on next after finishing your beautiful sweater. Have a wonderful day my friend ☺️

  2. Oh no on losing the sock! I like what you said about trying to do “all things”, and I really related your mention (in your reply above) of the retired person who was busier now than when they worked. We feel the same. It does seem like I got more done when my kids were little and when I worked, probably because I didn’t have as much “craft” time. Enjoy your weekend!

    1. It’s ok on the sock, I have plenty of yarn and needles to start a new pair. I wonder why that is? Maybe because you now have time to do more than when you were working. Thank Linda and enjoy your weekend too!

  3. The colorway of the sock you are wearing looks so much like a paiar I have using yarn from A Girl And Her Wool. I’m sad she no longer dyes yarn although I was not a big customer. I still have a little more of her yarn that I need to knit into socks. That is very sad that you lost a sock and it’s needle. I would be very upset. Work is definitely a bummer to crafting.

    1. It’s a lovely color Maureen and the yarn was purchased from Traveling Yarn, an Arizona based company. I think she may have stopped dying yarn. It is sad about my sock, but it’s ok, I have plenty of yarn in my stash to use, and needles too. I so agree about work and crafting, someday it will change ☺️

  4. I’m sorry you lost your sock. Your positive outlook is admirable. I recall those days of working and how I longed to have a little more time to devote to making and just plain being. Finding that balance between work, family, friends, and creative pursuits is the work of a lifetime but it’s somewhat easier in retirement. Take good care.

  5. I don’t work now but I still can’t find the time to do much crafting some days. I agree with what you say about being creative not being a race to the finish line. I’m definitely a process knitter rather than a product knitter, I enjoy the time I sit putting in stitch after stitch. It gives me the time to actually think about things and just be in the moment. That new shawl design looks lovely and squishy.

    1. I’m a process knitter too Jo and like you enjoy the time to think, and to sort things out. I’m hoping as time progresses I will be able to find more balance between work and creative endeavors. Thank you so much too for stopping by ☺️

  6. I’m so sorry to hear about the lost sock. Were you somewhere else for this meeting? Maybe it’ll turn up? Life does tend to have its ups and downs, and I’m sure this busy cycle will pass (soon, I hope) and give you more crafting time.

    1. Thank you Sarah, it’s ok and yes I was staying at a hotel for my meeting. Life definitely does have its ups and downs, and my busy cycle will pass soon. Meantime I take one day at a time, and enjoy my creative endeavors when I can.

    1. Thank you, I think a lot of us at this age understand. I was sad about the sock, but it’s ok I have plenty of yarn to make more socks. I hope you try the heel. The link I gave has a great video tutorial and I think the Earthtones Girl on YouTube does too.

  8. As someone with a full-time job and numerous other commitments related to work and within my parish, I know all too well the challenge of finding time for the creative. I always admire fellow bloggers who can post on a regular schedule, but at this time in my life, that’s not attainable. I do what I can and try to find a good balance. My biggest challenge is knitting in the evenings when I am tired! So many mistakes.

    1. Regina Mary it is challenging isn’t it. I can relate to what you are saying. I have slowed down on a few things because like you when you’re tired mistakes are made. The bright side, it all will be there tomorrow ☺️

  9. It sounds as if life got a bit stressful last week. I totally agree with you that our creative time shouldn’t be a race to the finish line, but rather a restorative time to regroup and enjoy the process.

The cozy that you made for your French press is lovely! I really like that grouping of colors. I’m sorry that you lost your sock and needles…that had to be so disappointing. I admire your desire to continually try something new, as in stitches that you haven’t done before. I enjoy that challenge too…only in crocheting.

    1. It was a bit stressful Dianna but all is well. I love that thought..l definitely needs to be a restorative time to regroup and enjoy the process. As far as the sock, it’s ok and needles have been repurchased. I still love learning new things and hope that never changes. Enjoy your day!

  10. That is sad about your sock! I hope it turns up somewhere. I can say I’m not a fan of Brioche stitch. I’ve had to use it twice and not enjoyed it but perhaps that was the patterns it was being used in. Angela does do some lovey designs though.

    1. It’s quite ok and it may turn up but I think I left it in the hotel I was staying in. I’ve never tried brioche but her pattern , I believe m has alternative stitch to replace that portion.
