A Life With Wool

An online journal of my creative life

Friday Finish

I casted on the Barley hat on Tuesday the 16th and finished it early this morning. I love this hat pattern for its shear simplicity and that it’s always a quick knit. I made this hat a bit bigger just in case I decide to gift it to my dad, who likes to take early morning walks no matter if it’s chilly or warm, and he likes blue. If I decide not to gift it, it’s the perfect slouchy hat for me.

For this project I used just about three quarters (60 grams) of a full skein of the last of my Swans Island American Collection stash and have enough leftover yarn from my two projects to make a pair of fingerless mitts. I highly recommend this pattern for beginner knitters to advanced knitters, and for gift giving too because it’s an unisex design.

I plan to wind my Sock Squad yarn later today and cast on socks. I still haven’t decided it I am making a pair of plain vanilla socks or a pair of socks with a simple design. I will be looking through all my sock patterns to see if anything catches my eye that would be a good match to the yarn color. Meantime, I am leaning towards another pair of Hermione’s Every Day socks, but we’ll see what else I can find.

  1. I’m going to look at that hat pattern – I’ve got yarn to use up and that might be the ticket! I’m looking forward to seeing your Sock Squad socks. My first one is FINALLY progressing!

  4. The hat looks lovely. I knit one for my son in a gray and it is so versatile. Can’t go wrong with HED sock either. I love how these patterns are so knittable!

  6. That is a great hat pattern. How do you like those needles? Curious about the cords for magic loop.

    1. It really is a great pattern. I like the cords and think they would be nice for magic loop but in honesty I think you might like the Knitter’s Pride Nova Plantina needles.. sharp points a very flexible cable. They are hard to find but I get mine from Fabulous Yarns https://www.fabulousyarn.com/needles_novas.shtml Addi Sock Rocket ps are good too,

    1. Thank you Sarah and agree, the hat is classic and definitely warm. It’s often hard for me to decide on patterns but want something that will show off the yarn a bit.

  10. What a great hat. I do enjoy a Tin Can Knits pattern. I don’t think you can go wrong with Hermione’s Everyday Sock pattern. How fun that a journal comes with The Sock Squad.
